Language Arts is one of my top subjects! I hold a Master's degree in special education and am experienced as a K-5 special education teacher in all areas of language arts. I work with students with other health impairments, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and specific learning disabilities including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. I am certified by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators as an Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator. Orton-Gillingham is a multisensory literacy approach that includes explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, reading, spelling, and writing. A Little Bit About Me...

I usually like to meet with a person and understand their basic needs, before I decide which was to approach their tutoring - not every person learns the same way, so I approach each situation differently.
While attending Mary Baldwin College, I not only majored in English, but also worked as a tutor in the school writing center. As a tutor, I worked with students (freshmen-seniors) on basic editorial skills, correct punctuation, and the overall writing process (brainstorming, rough drafts, final copies, etc). However, my experience does not only tend to the college level - I have also worked with children in middle and high school for SAT prep, reading comprehension, and grammar.

Summer Reading/English Tutor

Fun! I try my best to make tutoring sessions interactive and engaging so that kids enjoy learning. I pick topics, books, vocabulary that is interesting to the student, when possible.
I tutored two boys ages 6 and 9 in the areas of reading and spelling. I have been tutoring them on and off during the school year for the past 2 years. I have a relaxed, stress-free teaching style, while staying on task and topic. I make sure the pupils really understand the material by breaking things down to the basics, and reviewing the foundations. I prefer to relate things to the real world. For instance, when teaching anything dealing with Greek Mythology, I like to pick out something from the myth that is relevant to today (like from "The Iliad," the character Ajax is known as being stronger than Greece, and the soap brand Ajax has the slogan of being "stronger than grease").
