Marine Biology is one of my top subjects! We live in one of the greatest places on earth and amazing technology in hand to study Marine Biology. Allow me to take you through my class on Marine Biology using videos and interactive technology through local aquariums and research projects. I have been teaching/tutoring students in life science for over 20 years, but it all started with my BA from UC Berkeley in Integrative Biology. At Berkeley I tutored/taught part-time as a Lab Teacher at Berkeley Community College, a study group leader at UC Berkeley student learning center, and a Kaplan MCAT tutor. I then earned my MA in Zoology (with a thesis in molecular evolution from University of South Florida) and mentored/taught College Freshmen Biology and worked in immunology at the Cancer Research Center. I moved back to the Bay Area and worked at Biotech companies including Genentech, and Amgen. I am patient yet firm. My personal background in mathematics was fairly rigorous, so I always make my students show their work. As the subject material gets tougher, it becomes more critical to be able to check all stages of one's work. One of my math teachers gave me some sage advice: "Math teachers are lazy. We find the quickest and shortest route to a solution." I've taken this tongue-in-cheek wisdom to heart in my own way. While there is only one single solution for any math problem, there are infinitely elegant ways to arrive at that solution. I show my students different ways to solve problems because flexibility is key. Mathematics is a great way to keep one's thinking nimble and that can help throughout one's education.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have discovered over the past year of substituting that I absolutely love teaching. Students are very comfortable with me as I am a very positive, friendly person who smiles a lot. As the parent of a college student, I was a tutor for 12 years. I know how to make learning fun and rewarding.
I have a BS in Business and have worked in Mortgage and Banking for many years. This industry requires excellent written communication skills as well as practical math skills. In the job I had where I mentored kids, it was a program called Lil Kickers. This program was for kids 3-10 years old where they were taught how to listen to instructions and communicate with one another. This was mixed in with games that helped their motor skills and ultimately helped them with their soccer skills. I have learned it is very important to be enthusiastic and passionate with the kids.
As a recent college graduate, I know how to work hard. I earned a bachelor degree, BS in Marine Biology from UC Santa Cruz, where I took many science and math classes. I do not have any experience in tutoring, but I have been a mentor to kids in other jobs I have had.
