A Little Bit About Me...

Everyone has something to add, especially in the classroom, and should not be overlooked. Linda Albert's model of "Cooperative Discipline" first began to intrigue me when I was introduced to her model in on of my Education courses. I agree whole-heartedly in her approach, which is based around the idea that helping students feel capable and connected will encourage them to contribute to their class and be successful. I find that my aspiration to be a teacher grows stronger through the knowledge that I have the ability to make students feel capable and connected. Every student has something valuable to contribute to the classroom. They may just need a little nudging in order to make that discovery.

I love the process of really getting to know a student on an individual level. That is crucial to determine their learning style and their strengths. It is incredibly rewarding to experience a student's progression and also to learn from them in ways you wouldn't expect. I'm a strong believer in the Gardner's ideas of many different learning styles and types of intelligent. Some students are better audio, tactile, or visual learners. I feel it is the teacher's responsibility to find the best learning style for each student and build on that format through scaffolding. I love nothing better than to see the light bulb go off in a students mind. This also helps them to realize that learning can be a fun adventure.
I've been a special education teacher and held positions in resource and in self-contained rooms. I've taught students with learning problems in reading, math, and writing. I have also worked in the Lights on for Learning program and have been a home tutor for home bound students in the district.
