My comments on tutoring Calculus II : Took Calculus as a undergraduate physics major and use it on a daily basis.

Students should come to me with problems, questions, and having tried to understand the material first. Questions are important to me because they help give a sense of where you are getting confused and stuck. Physics and Mathematics are difficult, and there is no such thing as a stupid question. Ideally, students will do reading, and then work through concepts and problems with me, where I help when stuck and point out mistakes.
Began as a Teaching Assistant (TA) in the Michigan Technological Universities (MTU) physics department as a physics lab TA for 3 years. Then I helped develop an Astronomy Lab and was the lab TA for a year. I then was a TA for a large lecture physics class for engineering students where I helped students on a 1-1 basis and helped the professor manage the class. A Little Bit About Me...

I have a BS in Mathematical Biology from U of M Ann Arbor. I held a 3.61 math GPA. I have experience tutoring highschool students in algebra II as well as college students in calculus and statistics. During the last four years I have tutored students in Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Calculus II, and Statistics.
My teaching style varies from student to student. However, the basic foundation is the same. I like to develop the fundamentals and build a foundation on top of them. I also like to see the students do a certain problem that they are struggling with in front of me. I enjoy helping junior high and high school students excel in all their subjects. Particularly, I feel it's important to relate their current studies to real life situations to help them understand the link between the theoretical material and practical solutions. I have tutored math and science for high school children at the West Midland Family Center for two years and am currently tutoring all five of my children in all subjects.
One of the key motivators for learning is the link between theoretical math or science topics and everyday problems that a student can solve using these skills. I worked in the Math Department, as either a tutor or a Teaching Assistant, for the past three years. As a Teaching Assistant I led a 50 minute recitation of the material, graded materials, and kept records for my 30 students. As a tutor I helped MSU undergraduates learn key concepts and study for their upcoming exams. I worked in the Algebra room and the Calc I room. I helped out a little in the Calc II room, but I never had time, as a full time student myself, to review the material and refresh my memory, so I was much less helpful than I should have been.
I love teaching because I love passing on knowledge. I believe anyone can learn anything they want, it just takes us all different lengths of time and effort to achieve our educational goals.
