Personally, I have seen (and experienced myself) the benefits of students learning underlying principles of math material via hands on, sequential learning processes. It is of the utmost importance that a student understands the separate components of a theory or process in order to comprehend the larger picture. Therefore, I believe rote learning seriously prohibits true understanding for many students. Earlier, I worked for 3 decades leading actuarial students at two insurance companies, solving mathematical problems and doing actuarial research. A Little Bit About Me...

I have taken math for 4 years in college. It is a subject that I very much enjoy-so much that all of my sons are also strong in mathematics. My oldest is a national merit scholar finalist, and my youngest son is captain of his high school math team. Math is fun, like a puzzle-once the student sees this fact, they begin having more fun and less fear of the subject.
I am a patient teacher, and I use many different ways of communication. I try to find the style of learning best suited to my pupil. Removing the fear of the subject seems to be the most important part. I believe that most students can understand mathematics with a proper explanation. For example, the order of operations is usually presented to students without explanation for its existence.
