As a Purdue graduate, I was the recipient of the highest level of instruction in math and science. As an undergraduate I was named on the Dean’s list six times and was inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society. I have earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering. In order to be granted this degree I was required to gain a great understanding in many areas of math and science. In addition, I have been on the cutting edge of computer science from the first hand held calculators. I can program in FORTRAN, Assembly, Basic, Pascal, and C languages, on a variety of platforms. After working as an engineer for 20 years, I then pursued a teaching license and have taught High School math for the last decade. I enjoy teaching and working with all children. Not all of us can be the “Star Athlete”, but we can all learn the rules of the game. All children can learn.

As a parent of middle school students, I understand the importance of motivating students by using real world examples and providing hands-on experiences. I enjoy working with a student until I see the "light bulb" come on. Because people are individuals, I realize that the same approach will not work with every student. In general, however, it is helpful to take something that the student already knows, and to work from there to those concepts that they do not know. This approach provides a solid reference point for memory and understanding. Patience is a key, and realizing that the length of time required to learn a concept is not an indication of intelligence. I strive to maintain the dignity of the student I tutor in my demeanor to them, treating them as my comrades, my fellow learners, as opposed to my subordinates. I convey to each student a never give up attitude and show confidence in their ability to understand the material. Each problem will be explained to the student and I will encourage every student to ask questions. After the student gains confidence in working problems together then I will have the student work a similar problem by themselves to confirm their level of understanding. After the student works the problem I will go over it and correct any mistakes in their work . I have an engineering background with a BS and Masters degree in Electrical Engineering. An engineering degree requires a significant background in math and science. While in college I had such a love for math that I took math classes as electives and became a math tutor for college math. My most recent experience is that of an Instructor in math and science.
