Graduate student looking to help students achieve their goals!

I have tutored children off and on since I was in high school. More recently, my time has been spent volunteering with The Giving Tree, where I tutored inner-city children after school and helped organize activities (museums, zoo, etc.) on the weekends. I am currently in the final stages of my dissertation for a doctorate in psychology, so I am always actively learning, too. I have spent a lot of time using Microsoft Word and Excel for a number of application over the past ten years and feel I have become very proficient in using it. I have shown many of my friends and co-workers several aspects of the program that they have implemented in everyday use such as shortcuts and hot keys as well as formatting end editing tips.

I like to start by encouraging the student to demonstrate what they know, and then give them a little nudge of guidance when they come to something that confuses them. If they're really stumped, then I try to teach them first from a conventional standpoint, then switch to a more example-based explanation. There is almost always an example or an analogy that can explain something that is confusing a student. Sometimes it takes a few examples before you find the one that makes sense to that person, but with a little patience it becomes easily understandable for the student.

During the summers of college I was trained in Project Read and organizational skills. I then tutored youth from grade school to high school in math and science from grade school math to algebra and geometry the same for science. I worked with the teachers to determine when assignments were due and worked on planning with the students to plan out how and when to work on projects to complete them on time.
