A Little Bit About Me...

I work well with children of all ages and am considerably patient, easygoing, although stern as well with my students. My teaching style consists of visual illustrations mixed with a lecture or teaching session. Through my experiences at USD I have determined that the amalgamation of these two styles produce more stimulating teachings as well as information retention being maximized as well. I typically work off of a performance based reward system since it appears to me that children are motivated by praise and reward in order to push them to do better on each successive obstacle they encounter in the classroom

I have always enjoyed working with children of all ages. I taught dance for my high school years to younger children and I believe that has taught me a lot about teaching styles. I understand that not everyone learns at the same rate or in the same way. Students all have different styles of learning just as teachers have their different styles of teaching. Not only have I taught dance, but I also tutored through high school and thoroughly enjoyed it. I do believe ever child has that opportunity to learn if they are given the chance by a good teacher.

I went to college at Iowa State University and finished at the University of South Dakota with a major in communication disorders and a minor in psychology. I have a strong training background. I have held jobs in which I was a manager, which required me to train staff. I also taught computer classes (Microsoft, Internet, Basic PC) at Western Iowa Tech for a few years. I have been teaching for the last fifteen years. I started my teaching career in the junior high grades and then decided that my preference would be with the younger children. I have taught both second and third grade and throughly loved both levels. I have attended various classes and workshops relating to helping children learn to read and love doing it. I have taken the South Dakota Reading Curriculum both at the second and third grade levels. I have tutored children and for four years ran the summer reading program for the Beresford area children.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher with dyslexia I felt that I was unable to teach reading to my students. I went in search of more training and found Alphabetic Phonics a Orton Gillingham program. I have sense used what I learn in the almost 160 hours of training with 11 students and seen progress in all of them.
I love working with children and helping fulfill their potential. I like at children as water that must be directed in the right direction. I will do this my trying to find research validated methods of teaching that teaching to all the learning styles. If the child does not learn the first time I will try again and again until they have got it.
