I usually follow the curriculum assigned. But I employ the socratic method as well as questioning each fact I teach. I also tie in clinical correlations to make it more interesting. I have found my students repond well to me and like me as a professor and I spend some time tutoring my students at CCAC (Community Colleghe of Allegheny County).

A Little Bit About Me...

The most challenging aspect of teaching comes from the many different styles in which students acquire information. While some students benefit more from a hands-on approach, others are better served by visualizations/illustrations, while still others learn best by repetition of material. I have always approached students with an open mind, allowing them to help me understand what it is they need to learn materials in an efficient manner. I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.

I approach tutoring with the assumption that every student wants to learn more but isn’t always sure how to proceed. Each student brings his or her own perspective to understanding a subject. I try to find where the student is having difficulty and how they process the material i.e. are they a visual learner, auditory, kinesthetic learner etc… It is also important to address any misconceptions they have and to do so early so that they can build a sound base for learning. I believe that learning is best achieved in a comfortable, nothreatening enviroment. People learn best when they understand the importance of the material being taught, something I strive to convey to my students. While I can easily teach a didactic lecturing style, I feel that an interactive approach often better meets the needs of the students. Ultimately, education is a reflection of the students success and the teacher is merely a means to that end.
