A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching, coaching and mentoring children. My pleasure derives from your child’s success at school or in their lives. I have tutored children at several levels, with varying degrees of leaning capacities. I teach them techniques to learn, remember, apply the knowledge and take different types of tests/quizzes. I spend considerable amount of time in learning students’ educational background and preparing myself to teach such that tutoring does not feel a burden to a kid, and kids show more interest in learning and absorbing relative subject matters. I take pride and strive to make a significant contribution to building career of their choices to all of students I teach.

Sine high school, I have worked with children in BOCES. However, I started college later in life, after children and marriage. I wanted to provide my children with an education that I couldn't afford since I knew nothing of grants in 1974. I started with my AA and did not stop until I achieved my MS. My education has taught me discipline, research, study habits, and critical thinking skills. I have tutored students K-12; in Language Arts, Reading, Literature, English, Parenting, Nutrition, Careers, and electives for 11 years. Each individual student has taught me something new.
My teaching style is to discovery how each child learns, whether it is visual, audio, movies, written, tactile, CD's, adaptive technology, and re-learning. I want my students to have success and become life-long learners while providing them with the tools that help them reach their potential. Learning ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I hated science and math when I was in junior high and high school. When I asked my teachers questions, they didn't give me the answers I was looking for. Luckily, I got into a great university and found out, after taking a few core classes, that I actually love science. Once I really understood some of the key concepts, I found it to be fun and interesting. I have taught several sections of undergraduate geology labs while attaining my BA in geological sciences and have enjoyed being the one who gets to answer the questions.
I teach others by learning and adapting myself. I love finding new and creative ways to explain familiar concepts. For my degree I had to take a year of chemistry, which I immediately fell in love with, even though I had hated it in high school. I found myself tutoring the other students in my class for fun and even took two organic chemistry classes as elec ... read more

I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to possess the drive and desire to want to achieve academic success. Having a love of learning and understanding what it takes to transfer that love to young people is a gift and my purpose in life. I believe in helping individuals to become the best that they can be. When you are on target in your purpose, it is like breathing - easy. With that said, my area of expertise is math up to algebra. On the elementary level, I can assist with all fundamental subjects but again math is my love. If they are willing to try, I'm the right person. Positive encouragement goes a very long way.
I believe in showing through example, repetitiveness, breaking a concept down to basic molecules and finding the missing link. If you understand the foundation, you will be able to grasp the total concept. My experience has taught me that ther ... read more

I have been an amateur tutor ever since high school, when I tutored classmates for free. I spent 6 years as a nuclear trained electrician in the US Navy, 10 years in academia where I studied and taught psychology, biology, and communications, and the past 10 years in retail management. I took it upon myself to conduct impromptu training sessions in many different areas of study while in the Navy, and actively helped shipmates engaged in external study programs. I implemented a tutoring program for pre-med and pre-vet students and others while a member of Beta-Beta-Beta (the National Honor Society for Biology) at Southern Illinois University. I have used my teaching and training skills in innumerable situations as a retail manager. A Little Bit About Me...

I think it is more important to understand the student than to understand the material. Don't get me wrong - as a teacher I always re-educate myself to the material if need be - but I feel my real strength as an educator lies in finding a new way to teach the same concept. If a student is failing to learn, it is less often the material itself and more often the way it is being presented. Finding a new way is something I have practiced in school and at BOCES, and is my greatest strength as a teacher.
I hold an English degree from a program that largely overlapped with Education - basically, I have studied teaching as a student at college. On the other end of the spectrum, I have been a substitute educator for Capital Region BOCES for 3 years, working with teaching professionals on short-term assignments. Through this experience I believe I have gathered a good deal of craft in the a ... read more

I believe in the "practice makes perfect" approach, especially when it comes to math, science, and language study. That said, I also believe that practice can be interesting, fun, encouraging and reinforcing. I would hope to help a student figure out how to learn and approach new challenges with confidence and enthusiasm. Sometimes what a child needs most is to simply understand that he or she is capable of achieving. Instilling self-affirmation is an extremely important part of teaching, and that would be my goal in working with your child.
I began teaching as a college sophomore at MIT. For 9 years, I taught primarily Multivariable Calculus, but also single-variable Calculus, Linear Algebra, and several writing courses. Since graduating, I have been involved in various volunteer tutoring efforts. My minors are in Math, German, and Writing. I happen to be a black female, the fi ... read more

My teaching style is fueled by my personal enthusiasm for academics. For instance, my passion for math and science embodies how I approach the world. I think of life on a molecular level. In other words, where many get frustrated with complex theories as they become increasingly abstract, I can easily visualize the intangible and relay concepts in more graspable terms that most teachers and textbooks cannot provide. I bring humor and light-heartedness to abstract subject matter, thus making critical-thinking less critical and just thought. Having conversations about how science informs the world is an important part of my livelihood. Furthermore, rather than conversing with colleagues, sharing my knowledge with those who have difficulty understanding subjects where I excel, brings me such gratification. Knowing that I have helped someone else understand an aspect of the world even just a ... read more

As a graduate from SUNY Albany with a Masters in Literacy I take education in reading very seriously. I have been tutoring local students for the past three years. I have also substituted in the Capital Region for the past four years at various grade levels. In 2008, I taught 6th grade English Language Arts at Hoosic Valley Elementary school. I believe that literacy can be inetegrated within any subject and can be made accessible for any student regardless what there strengths or weaknesses may be.
I enjoy teaching children of all ages. I believe that a good teacher is one that can reach any child regardless of how that specific student learns best. One thing that I have found that works best is finding out the many interests of a student and then using those interests to engage the child. Once a child is engaged in the material, teaching is the easy part. I believe modelin ... read more

Besides having a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics, I have a strong analytical/technical background that enabled me to succeed in physics, civil engineering, and electrical engineering electives that I took as part of my undergraduate studies. During a ten-year period during my professional career in the telecom industry, I trained managers and technicians in a number of subjects. I also developed training curriculums and prepared training materials for my classes. The subjects involved classroom training in use of a Verizon inventory management system, quality assurance seminars, and informal mentoring workshops for new managers on improving their leadership, interpersonal, communications, and conflict resolution skills.
