My doctoral dissertation examined college-level remedial reading and writing students in an effort to determine if adding online instruction to traditional instruction would improve student performance. My dissertation explored five hypotheses, and I found statistical significance in all five; thereby supporting the notion that adding online instruction to traditional instruction can improve student learning. While I was a doctoral student, I was also a Merit Scholar. In all cases, an initial assessment of both the academic level and the temperament of each student are necessary before I establish a particular style. Some students are comfortable with a quieter, more formal tutor, while others are successful with a more casual, animated tutor. In every situation, I look for opportunities to give positive reinforcement.
