A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that learning can be fun and creative, which is why my approach to teaching often involves the use of visuals and hands on projects to reinforce subject matter. Having been a Sunday school teacher and youth group leader for almost 20 years, I hold a special place in my heart for children and teenagers. I believe in them, and I believe that there is more than one way to solve a problem. Because I am an artist I see things from different angles and am able to explain a math problem or a biology lesson in a number of different ways. I achieved an English degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where my senior thesis was selected as a finalist for the UW Creative Writing prize. I am passionate about the English language, but I think that writing is becoming a lost art. Quality writers are quality communicators. As writing in general falls into disrepair, those who can write clearly and read critically will have an edge in every institution they enter--from the University, all the way to the workplace.
I enjoy hands-on teaching and one-on-one interaction with students. Good writing can simplify the thought process, and leads to students becoming better thinkers and communicators. I am easy-going and patient, but I take language and writing very seriously. I am a second year UW Madison student pursuing a math degree. I have completed Calculus 1, Calculus 222, Calculus 234, Calculus 3 based engineering statistics, and Actuarial Science (a class designed to prepare actuarial students for the P exam). Next semester I will take Linear Algebra and the Basic Concepts of Math. I enjoy working with young people very much, and I have an intense passion for math, so I have chosen to pursue a career in Math education. During my freshman year at UW Madison, I volunteered weekly at Sennett Middle School to tutor students in math and science. It was exciting to watch these young students improve their knowledge and skills.
