In 2005 I began a part time job as an Adult Education instructor for Sentinel Career Center where my primary focus was language arts/writing. I was part of the STAR reading program where I became certified to teach adults to read. In this program and as a GED instructor I have tutored many individuals of varying ages, education levels and backgrounds. At Wilmington College, we had supplemental instruction which is basically a group tutoring session where the leader is chosen by the professor teaching the course. I was a supplemental instructor for five (5) different courses and I was also an individual tutor for the five supplemental instruction classes along with two (2) other courses. I believe teaching is the key to each child's future. When presented with the chance to succeed, I believe each child will. I believe in presenting each child with a verbal and visual explanation of each objective. I then believe that each child needs the chance to complete a task with encouragement and success before independent work. Assessment should only be taken AFTER a child has experienced numerous chances for understanding, practice, and mastery. Flexibility is another thing that many students are not allowed in class, and I believe is very important to success. This is permitted in my classes on an as-needed basis.
