A Little Bit About Me...

My philosophy of discipline is simple: observe, take data and find the function of the behavior. When a student misbehaves in class there is an underlying reason. Every behavior has a function. The function can be to gain access to an item or person, to avoid doing the work or aggressive behaviors if they do not understand the assignment completely, medicine or personal affects (hungry, sleepy or thirsty). I also believe in “brain breaks”. My students take a break every hour to get up, walk around, listen to music and get the wiggles out. By doing this one simple trick, they are able to concentrate better and have an opportunity to get the wiggles out. I also have “my time versus your time”. Meaning “my time” is a time for the students to learn or pay attention while I am teaching. “Your time is your play time. If my time gets taken away then your time is taken away. Your ESL, Spanish, French, Korean learning system /16 yr exp

I have an MBA focusing on empowerment of small business and a BA in Romance Languages. I have been studying/teaching Spanish for over 20 years and French for over 10 years. Professionally, I have been hired as a trilingual in customer service and for consecutive and simultaneous interpretation in a variety of medical and legal proceedings in Spanish for the last 5 years.
Q: We've been studying Spanish/French at home for the past year. Would we really benefit that much more from a class environment? A: Absolutely! Language cannot be truly learned in a vacuum. Language is dynamic, and so should be learned and practiced continuously in an interactive environment. Most people say their main goal in learning a foreign language is to be able to speak it. That is why we use the power of the internet, weekly phone conversation practice, and in-class discussions to constantly improv ... read more

Reluctant & Struggling Readers can become Good Readers!

I worked for 12 years as a Special Education teacher in the public school system, teaching students with ADD, learning disabilities, autism, Aspergers, emotional and behavior disorders, and mild intellectual disabilities in a resource room and inclusion setting. I am able to quickly make significant connections with the students, building the good rapport that is essential to achieving a good working relationship. I have had the opportunity to train individuals at my place of employment. I also have experience tutoring students one-on-one in various subjects ranging from English to Science and Math. I am currently in the Communications field where the majority of my work involves writing, editing, and preparing documents for training.
My teaching style varies based on the child's needs. I am very adaptable and willing to provide the best method of learning for each individual child. I am patient and pay attention to the child's attitude and non-verbal cues to see where I need to adjust my teaching, even if that means stopping the session for that moment. I believe that I learn how to teach from the child.

During college, I swam varsity, an experience that taught me the patience and time management required to balance a rigorous academic schedule with the physical strain of a full-time sport. Later, I found that my personality and ability to work well with others was more helpful out of the water. During my 4th year, I coached the club swim team, and then moved up to assistant coaching the varsity team during my 5th year. I was able to understand the difficulties students were having and helped them with their work as well as helping them manage their schedules. There is no reason success cannot be achieved if given the proper motivation and the right guidance. Helping students be able to help themselves has been my greatest satisfaction.
During high school I worked as a volunteer in St. Petersburg, Florida through All Children’s Hospital. Within the Bedside Buddies Program, I was ab ... read more
