Although I never actually taught a class, I was able to learn how to adapt to the individual needs of a student. Some learn visually, others with games, practice, hands on... and the list continues. I find starting out with the basics and working up to the harder subjects is important. So, with the assignment given I also ask other questions of the student to see if they understand the more basic concepts of the problem as well as answer the question. I find this helps them understand the process more completely and the student ends up giving more complete answers on assignments and exams. As a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Kansas State, I was tasked not only with teaching mathematics in a classroom setting, but also in a more personal setting. Part of my duties included being available to briefly tutor students (ranging from basic math through Introductory Differential Equations) one on one in the Math Help Room.
Let's face it; most students do not want to be in a math class.
