Latin Tutoring

The ordinary student can no longer count on being able to take Latin, but there are, however, extracurricular means. The College Board examinations, which serve as an educational tool for the admission of students into colleges, still features one Latin examination on a voluntary basis: Advanced Placement Latin: Vergil. Select a tutor today. With the Roman conquest, Latin spread to many Mediterranean regions, and the dialects spoken in these areas, mixed to various degrees with the autochthonous languages, developed into the Romance tongues, including Aragonese, Catalan, Corsican, French, Galician, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Romansh, Sardinian, Sicilian, and Spanish. My Experience: In 1964, I graduated from Columbia College, in Geology. Subsequently, I worked in oil well drilling in Israel, and on a dam project in New Jersey. After earning an MA in Art Education, at Brooklyn College in 1975, I helped found the Waltham Mass. Artists Association, where I created beautiful enamels, and mentored several child students. One of my favorite projects, with friends, was facilitating the creation, exchange, and display of peace and environmental posters, by kids (and adult artists) in the USA and around the world. I also worked for over 20 years as a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable Teacher/Naturalist for the Mass. Audubon Society. For several years before I left Mass. in 2006, I also worked as a tutor for Club "Z", "No Child Left Behind", in Math and English, in the "inner city." Teaching Style: When the school busses arrived in the morning at Drumlin Farm

My teaching style devotes about half the time to direct instruction, but I make that a firm upper limit. The student must do the active learning in a classroom, and I foster this by Socratic questioning, discussions, and project work. Tutoring demands an even lower percentage of direct instruction than does classroom teaching, and as a tutor I encourage the student to direct his own session as much as possible. I gained my BA in History only after years of serious and devoted study, and I bring a respect for whatever subject I teach to the classroom. After gaining my teaching certification with my MS, I taught history and geography in Alabama. After my Latin American Studies MA. I taught Latin, Greek, and Spanish. My tutoring was for middle and high school students in these and other fields, and I am currently a tutor for the University of Arizona's SALT Center, a program which serv
