My Experience: In 1964, I graduated from Columbia College, in Geology. Subsequently, I worked in oil well drilling in Israel, and on a dam project in New Jersey. My teaching style devotes about half the time to direct instruction, but I make that a firm upper limit. The student must do the active learning in a classroom, and I foster this by Socratic questioning, discussions, and project work. Tutoring demands an even lower percentage of direct instruction than does classroom teaching, and as a tutor I encourage the student to direct his own session as much as possible. I gained my BA in History only after years of serious and devoted study, and I bring a respect for whatever subject I teach to the classroom.
