I was accepted into AmeriCorps*NCCC, a community-based, government-run volunteer program upon my college graduation in 2003. Over the course of the next year, I was able to participate in projects that included working with the homeless, foodbanks, environmental projects, Habitat for Humanity and various educational programs. It was during my time as a teacher and tutor at an elementary school in a very low-income area in Sacramento, California, that I discovered my knack for teaching. Although I received my BA in English Writing, I never thought to pursue teaching as a career. Every student has a unique combination of learning styles, but he or she also has a predominant one such as visual learner, kinesthetic learner, etc. I try to figure out which style or styles the student responds to and use those styles to get through to the student. I also have the student explain the problem to me. Usually there is only one area where the student has gone astray in his or her thinking. By explaining the problem to me, I can see what he is and is not “getting.” Then we can concentrate only on what the student does not know.
