My favorite thing about teaching is when my students finally understand and make a connection to what I have been teaching them. I believe that all children have the ability to be successful; it just takes the right approach and the right tools to connect to each student. During the last ten years, I have taught students in the areas of study skills, test preparation, US history, language arts and ESL/ELL students learning English. I have written curriculum and supervised special education teachers working with dyslexic students. I earned my first master's degree in education, and am part way through my post-master's degree in special education (learning specialist degree) at Simmons College in Boston. When I was 10 years old, I started helping my grandmother—who is originally from Peru—with her English. As I knew and understood her native language very well, I relied on my ability to translate in order to help her. As this process worked quite well, I have continued to use it with all of my tutoring positions.
