I offer 16 years of English writing instructional experience. I have taught a diverse range of students, both in terms of abilities and cultural backgrounds. Instructional areas include English as a second language, developmental concerns, creative writing and poetry (I am a published poet), professional and technical writing. I have also provided SAT and AP preparation tutoring.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching all ages, but have experience working with college freshman. I believe that these students are at an age where they need to realize their dreams and need help to gain confidence within themselves. My strong point is within Math, but also comprehension. Written words and puzzles are not always easily understood. Some people need facts to help them learn or examples.
I have worked with college students in the past, working with comprehensive learning and mathematics. As a tutor, I review previous test, quizzes and work with the student to see where the "disconnect" lies. Most students are very capable, they just need someone to explain the material in a way they understand. Some students are visiual learners, other kinetic learners or they learn by doing. As I understand how the child learns and ask questions to see "why" the student chose the particular answer, I am able to see the problem and use a different teaching style for tutoring purposes.

My teaching styles vary depending on the student. I had one student who was an adult, moving to Ecuador for 2 years to work. I taught him the basics using methods such as flash cards, workbooks, and homework assignments. We met 3x a week for 3 months. In college I taught a Spanish course for a Christian Highschool near my university. This was rather different since the students were in their early teens. My method with them was 'FUN.' I used pop culture and things that interested them to help them learn. For example: I had them bring in a picture of their favorite celebrity and they had to describe the colors, clothing, and characteristics of that celebrity in Spanish. It was a success.

A Little Bit About Me...

Teach it. Repeat it. Practice It. Discuss it. What went right? WHat went wrong? What did they learn. Egg Cartons and White boards are my favorite manipulatives. Often mistakes are the best teachers.
My father was my first math mentor. He graduated from West Point - and tutored his roommate John Saxon. John developed the Saxon method. The next influencer was Investigations - the math program used at West School in New Canaan, CT where I did my student teaching. That program taught me to do "break apart" math - which teaches math independence. I have done more substitute teaching at all grade levels - and often play "Mental Math" with white boards -which the kids love. They work in teams and get the adrenaline rush of beating the clock and the teacher. This methodology - has worked really well for AD&D kids.
