One of the most difficult challenges in high-need schools is how to engage them to study. Based on my experience, children in low-income communities are more concerned of earning a living. Furthermore, they approach life on day to day basis rather on a long term approach. I spent 4 years in college teaching preschool, as well as 2 years as a high-needs reading tutor for the psych dept at my university.
