My comments on tutoring Entrance Exams : I have prepared quite a few of my GED graduates for the Accuplacer test, a placement test used before entering some local colleges, such as Sinclair Community College. If unprepared, a student may have to take as many as three developmental classes in reading, writing, and math. That means they may wind up taking up to nine total, unnecessary courses that drain their financial aid, as well as time, gas, energy, etc...

I enjoy teaching children of all ages, but I prefer to teach children within the middle school and high school ages. I feel that those times are critical to their learning and retention of information. I appreciate what I do or have done when I can see success with a student achieving knowledge within their particular area of study.

I vary my teaching style depending on the student's particular disposition. I normally allow them to dictate the pace at which I tutor without digressing from our objective. Nonetheless, my goal is to be positive impact on the student. I love to help students get to a level they did not expect they could achieve, and in the same token, I am appreciative when I am humbled by challenging problems for which I have no solution. However, when faced with such a situation, I guide the student in an appropriate direction, and let them know that I will use my own resources to discover a solution and then get back to them. Without question, my style is synonymous to what computer users refer to good programs as, "user-friendly." I am patient with my tutees and steady in my demeanor so that I can gain and hold their confidence.

A Little Bit About Me...

In teaching/tutoring, I have an ongoing teacher-student conversation that resembles a programmed unit. I talk mathematics from a tutor's point of view and expect the student to fill in the blanks in a way such that I've set him/her up. What it does is keep the student's attention since they've to answer my questions and "fill in my blanks". I love tutoring students of all ability levels as I show them the light at the end of the tunnel and that light eventually lights up their eyes and their faces! I love hearing my students say that can't believe this Algebra II is so easy or that he'd be failing this 7th math without my tutoring!
Since 1966, I have been teaching/tutoring students in all levels of mathematics. In 1977, I graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics Eduation. I consider myself a Mathematics teacher, substitute teacher(60 sch ... read more

Technology such as learning games, computers, and etc. are useful tools in teaching. I take the necessary time to learn the behavior and learning ability of the child in order to customize a teaching style that will be most beneficial. I believe that the most effective type of relationship between a teacher and a student is friendship to reduce any anxieties that may otherwise hinder the child’s progress. I am calm, well mannered, kind and devoted to the success of others. Teachers should be firm but not intimidating to the child. The learning environment should be safe, stress free and comfortable and above all positive. I have a strong belief that since children will be leading future generations then they need the proper skills to be able to solve tomorrow’s problems.

Throughout my entire life, regardless of the endeavor, I have been driven toward education--both of myself and my responsibility to teach others. I have tutored young children, children with attention disorders, high school and college students, and adults in subjects including math, science, language arts, grammar and computer skills. I was a corporate trainer for Darden Restaurants, teaching all aspects of that industry, and am currently the principal instructor for an equestrian program in Ohio. I have continued tutoring in math, science, and English since 1998, and plan to continue as such.
My teaching style revolves around a desire to make complicated subjects as simple and accessible as possible. My teaching style is customized to each student's needs. Because all students have different learning styles my instructions are patterned to maximize that student's particular style. After evaluating each student with a baseline test, goals and objectives based on the state's/district's curriculum are determined. My style is setting high but realistic expectations with rigorous assignments. I also try to have an overdose of encouragement and make the learning session fun time for students.

I really enjoy, generally speaking, helping people, but mainly help them pursue a future degree for themselves and a better life. I keep telling to my students that they should erase the "math fear" and that everything is easy if one understands it. Also, in case that they do not understand is my fought as a teacher and I am going to find a better way to explain the issue. In teaching, I try to make things easy for the students and make sure that they understood them. I believe that students should participate in the classroom.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching and working with others, especially children. I first like to start with finding out where the child is confused by going over and re-teaching past assignments that were misunderstood. I like to go over past tests and make sure they understand what they missed and teach them the correct answer. I believe that this is very important so they can grasp future material. I will then try many different teaching styles to either find what works best for the particular child or to keep things interesting and keep the child wanting to learn. Nothing is too hard for any child it is just how the material is presented and the fact that someone is taking one on one time with your child to make sure they understand before moving to the next topic.
