Admittedly, I have no direct (structured) teaching experience. However, I have nearly five years of experience in the journalism field, and during that time I've mentored a number of fledgling college and high school journalists. And while journalism and political science are my two specialties -- given that I have degrees in both -- I also have a fair amount of expertise in the tangential fields of English and History.
I do not have a particular teaching style because I don't believe that a single method works for everyone. Therefore, I operate from an Occam's Razor perspective -- whatever is the simplest solution is the best. My style focuses on the processes in arriving at a solution. The learning goal in mathematics is to impart understanding of the process of working toward a solution, not attaining the solution. In mathematics as many other endeavors, it is how we proceed to a goal that is important, not the goal itself. 1) I like to help the student define our goal: "What is it we are trying to achieve?" 2) "How do we get there?" Here I am open to suggestions from the student as to how we achieve that goal. This gives me clues to his/her learning style. 3) I try to help the student break down each problem or project into small, managable steps. If practicable, I prefer the use of physical objects or sketches to visually drive home geometric concepts, or use them as examples of "engineering problems" met and conquered by someone before them.
