My comments on tutoring German : My mother is from German and raised me bilingual, so I've been speaking German my whole life. I also spent two years living in Dresden, Germany.

I've been tutoring many friends or meeting 1 on 1 with University students to help them with English, German, and Spanish for about 4 years. Often, these have been unofficial language-exchange scenarios; for instance, I would meet with someone with whom I would speak for half an hour in English, then half an hour in Spanish (or whichever language it happened to be). This can be a very challenging and very exciting method of learning, and I believe it is the most effective.
I am a firm believer in the immersion style of learning languages. Understanding the grammar and acquiring a decent vocabulary are of course indispensable, but from personal experience learning a variety of languages, I've found that simply speaking is the best way to learn. While working as a assistant professor at a number of institutions (including the University of Chicago, University of Texas ,San Antonio and several others) I found I almost always had to teach my students how to take notes, how to read to locate crucial information and how best to structure written assignments. I have also had a lengthy career as a print journalist and have developed my communication skills to a fairly high level. I have tutored a few children of middle-school age but have mostly worked with college and graduate students.
I have found I am most successful by not being overly aggressive. I never confront my students with fast-paced drills or time limits.
