More About This Tutor...

I have a degree in English Literature and graduated with a 3.66 GPA in 2012. I have written hundreds of college level essay and research papers. I have a Master's Degree in Creative Writing and I am currently attending Southern New Hampshire University to obtain a Master's Degree in Education. I work as an educator and specialize in Language Arts.
I believe strongly in adapting to the students style of learning. There is no "one size fits all" in learning. I think it is important to go beyond teaching the facts by exploring the bigger picture. Development of critical thinking skills should go hand in hand with teaching the test materials.

My comments on tutoring Shakespeare : 4.0 in Shakespeare Literature class. Paper on Justice in Shakespeare's Italian plays presented during conference in 2008.

I believe in identifying where a student lies on the subject he/she is studying before going further. The advantage of one on one tutoring compared to classroom is that the lesson can be based around where the student’s strengths and weaknesses are rather than a blanket method. I also believe that the skills used in English can be best practiced and analyzed through writing rather than worksheets and tests. Therefore, I believe in having the student write on a variety of subjects and working through these pieces to show where they can improve.
I graduated from Fitchburg State University in 2009 with a Bachelor’s of Science in English and Professional Writing. I went on to become a staff writer for the Lowell Sun, a daily print publication in Lowell, Massachusetts. When I was laid off due to budget cuts, I wrote freelance for several entertainment and political publications. I a ... read more

As a Visual Arts Teacher and Special Educator, I am a resourceful, energetic person with a commitment to fostering lifelong learning in students. I am positive, outgoing, and approachable, with a talent for drawing out young people and putting them at ease. My philosophy in education is that all children are capable of being successful in school and life and their experiences and accomplishments should feel both enjoyable and rewarding through their own desires and perseverances. Given the rapid advancements in technology, I have come to realize that students can access much of the information needed to be successful in life. With this in mind and given the ever changing classroom philosophies around methods and instruction, I believe teachers’ curriculum and lesson plans can also include ways to support their roles as facilitators in a classroom where the teacher then guides student ... read more

When I tutor a student, it is important for me to understand what he or she needs. If the student does not know, I help figure it out. Once we discover what is needed, I encourage the student to look for strategic, organized ways of fulfilling that need. Some students need help reading a text closely to uncover meaning so they can develop an essay with solid evidence, for example. Other students struggle with SAT or MCAS writing because they are not yet familiar with the standard forms. Yet other students benefit from support in writing letters of application for various purposes. It is my goal to make sure students' writing comes out cogently and articulately.
I graduated with high honors from the University of Massachusetts Boston with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and an initial license to teach at the secondary level. After receiving my diploma in June of 2010, I applied ... read more

I have a lot to offer, having lived many lives in one lifetime. I am a quintessential American-born woman with good Russian language skills. I am hands on, and patient. My computer skills are very good. Successful myself, I know how to nurture that aspect in others. Understanding that all of us learn best in one way or another, I am adaptable. I can teach by modeling or discovery; importantly I find using the context of a larger world very useful in coaxing the desire to learn anything, and learn it well, invaluable.

It has been my experience that most students appreciate an opportunity to sit quietly and think carefully over a problem. Time for a short burst of creative and intense scrutiny is a rare luxury for most of my highly-stimulated students. My philosophy is that learning is a student's job and they should give that job the attention it deserves. I encourage my students to explore while learning but believe in providing a structure and models in which to do so. I am firm in my expectations of my students and insist that they work just as hard as I do myself.
With over 18 years of experience in Education I am capable of teaching to a variety of students and learning styles. My particular areas of expertise are composition, grammar, English literature (Shakespeare specialization), Latin, and American history. A Little Bit About Me...

Whether I am helping a student with prioritizing assignments, studying for tests, teaching study skills, or guiding him or her process of writing papers, I strive to promote metacognitive awareness throughout the tutoring experience. Students ultimately need to develop an awareness of how they learn best and what strategies work for them. It is my job to facilitate this process while yielding improved academic results through collaboration with students along the way.
Over the course of my years as a Learning Specialist in a university setting, and as Master Tutor Certified by The College Reading and Learning Association, I have developed and refined successful techniques with students who may struggle with the following: executive functioning issues, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, Asberger’s Syndrome, English as a Second Language, and various non-verbal learning disabilities. A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is both relaxed and focused. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with my students and also am aware that I learn from them. I believe that goals are important in lesson planning and children benefit from structure as long as it isn’t rigid. At times it’s important to respond to the direct concerns and/or questions a student may have even if they are not part of the planned lesson. If I’m doing my job well, when a student leaves me, they are happy and feel they have progressed toward becoming more skillful in language, especially reading.
