Communications is one of my top subjects! Gini Sikes is a jack-of-all media: an award-winning print journalist, broadcast producer, web editor and author.
She has penned stories and produced documentaries on a wide range of subjects, from homeless kids in the U.S. to genital mutilation in Africa for Essence, The Village Voice, Vibe, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Harper's Bazaar, Glamour, Travel and Leisure among others. She’s explored the impact of drug laws on poor immigrant women, investigated ways for teenagers to find affordable health care and camped with “eco warriors” ready to risk their lives to save the planet. She was a senior editor and entertainment writer at Mademoiselle magazine, interviewing the likes of Nicolas Cage, Jeremy Irons and Harrison Ford and at Metropolis magazine, where she conceptualized, assigned, edited and wrote stories on architecture, art or design.
A producer/writer for MTVNews series "True Life,” she directed episodes about drug addiction, youth violence and teenage sexual health. She was nominated for a News Emmy for writing Where Were You At 22? a documentary she also produced that captured the lives of the 2000 presidential candidates when they were the age of MTV's viewers. From the serious to the irreverent, she’s produced and written for VH1, PBS, Discovery Health, Court TV, TLC and Voice of America radio.
On the web she helped create and launch www.executionchronicles.org: a site connected to a documentary-in-progress about the daily life of a death row inmate. Currently she produces videos and contents for the www.eraeducationproject.com.
Sikes is the author of 8-Ball Chicks: A Year in the Violent World Of Girl Gangsters (Doubleday/Anchor), a journalistic narrative of a year spent with female gang members in three American cities. The book received favorable coverage in The New York Times Magazine, Elle, Glamour, MS, Kirkus, Publishers’ Weekly, Library Journal. During a countrywide tour, she appeared on TV and radio shows, including Geraldo, Bill O Reilly, and NPR’s Talk of the Nation.
She is the recipient of a 2000-01 Knight Fellowship at Stanford University and a graduate of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where she also taught as an adjunct for a magazine writing course.

I like to be conversational and casual, with a lot of give and take. Ideally the student is studying with me because he or she is focused and has a keen interest in the subject.
I've taught at highschool level for summer journalism workshop at Pace University in New York and also at the graduate level as an adjunct for a master's course in magazine writing at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. As an editor at Mademoiselle or a producer at MTVNews, I've had people working under me, whom I enjoyed mentoring and encouraging. I've stayed in touch for years with some individuals I've taught -- just as I've stayed in touch with my favorite professor from graduate school.
