In my own experience, the key to learning has been to find a "critical link:" that is, to figure out an angle that makes sense to my brain. It is one thing to be exposed to a subject, and another to understand, remember and easily employ what is learned. Everybody thinks differently, so the key is to discuss and explore the topic with a student until you see that they've experienced that "aha" moment. Then, I think you need to understand the youth learning styles and to find out where they are with their knowledge and then begin from there. Since earning my degree in Math in 1984, I have worked in the Software development field. The last 15 years I have been an independent consultant. I have 2 college age children and 2 elementary age twins. My college age children have both taken math through calculus so I have had many opportunities to tutor them over the years in advanced math. As a teacher I have to observe what works best for a student and then deliver the information in a variety of ways to accommodate these different styles. This is in direct response to the "sink or swim" curriculum I encountered throughout my own academic career. One of the best ways I have found to observe each students learning style is by using a "guided inquiry" approach.
