After graduating college in California, I returned to Portland to continue my education in mathematics at Portland State University. I began tutoring mathematics to high school students privately. My students found incredible success. Several went from C students to A students in all of their classes, not only math classes. It seems once their confidence shot up in math, it did so in the other classes as well. Eventually my reputation spread, and I started tutoring almost 30 hours a week, and even more during finals. It is the instructor's job to encourage thoughtful questions. To do this, the student must be made to feel at ease around the teacher and confident enough to ask the questions they really need answered to succeed.
