During my four years at East TN State University (ETSU), I tutored college students in General and Organic Chemistry, and multiple Psychology courses. I also taught for Kaplan Test Prep in small classes and prepared high school students for the SAT and ACT. I graduated in 2004 with a BS in Psychology. I then went to South College to get my teaching certificate. I student taught for 16 weeks under two wonderful mentoring teachers, and started subbing in January 2005. In August 2005 I received a full-time teaching position, and that is my current career.

The teaching style that brings the best success I've found is centered on two points. First of all, it is based on listening, which means getting the student to talk. Eventually, with guidance, I aim to get them the ability to talk through and solve any problem. The second major technique I like to use is analogies. Even complicated subjects can be simplified into their core components which are easy to understand if taught as an analogy to something more familiar in daily life. Just as the Bible uses parables or employers use phrases from team sports to explain team roles, I find lots of success by using analogies.

I graduated from the University of Tennessee with a BA in English Literature. Through my coursework at UT I polished both my analytical and writing skills, while concurrently gaining comprehensive knowledge of the canonical literature that is taught in school today and the methodology of teaching it. I explore their previous knowledge and build on that, avoiding either boring them or talking over their heads. I listen, we laugh, and then I reel them in, constantly showing them how my goals are relevant to their ultimate desires. Fast, if not immediate, feedback is essential to keeping students motivated, as is elaborate explanation of why they scored what they score.
