My experiences vary, as I worked with older children in filling out applications for jobs and to prepare for jobs. I also, have worked with many adults on writing papers for college preparation or with helping their children on writing tasks. I have worked with young children on phonics and reading readiness. I always liked playing up my quirky personality. My favorite teachers and professors were the goofy ones, the ones who can relate to the students' fun side. These teachers also challenged me the most, and I ended up getting so much more out of the course. I figure that, if a student likes the teacher, he or she will pay more attention and have a deeper respect for the teacher. The teacher then can use this trust to push the student a little more, intellectually. I find that is what works best for me. I don't any paid, professional tutoring experience. However, I have volunteered my services to family members and friends. During my sophomore year, I took Organic Chemistry and excelled. However, my friends were struggling. They hated me a bit for how easy it came to me. I decided to tutor them and help them with homework assignments and studying. They ended up doing very well on the exams

I prefer a very laid back, informal environment when I teach. I can adapt very easily, and only require that my students respect me and try their best. I can help them with the rest I have tutored over 50 children and teens, ages 3-14, in various subjects. With my youngest students, I have helped them improve their reading comprehension and ability markedly. My older students have been teens preparing for college, and as I have done extremely well on my SATs and ACT (scores can be supplied upon request), I have been able to help them improve in that field as well.

I taught grades kindergarten, first grade and second grade for a total of twenty-six years. Since then, I have tutored pre-k through 5th grade. My last assignment was tutoring a fifth grader in writing composition. I have worked as a tutor with several children on their reading, spelling and math skills. I worked as a UIL coach for creative writers in second grade. To teach reading, I teach the children to use all the reading strategies used by good readers.Examples of those strategies would be sight words, visual and context clues, and phonics. Then, I prefer to use leveled readers to improve their fluency and comprehension. For writing, after assessing their composition, I work with them to improve where needed skills such as organization, elaboration, complex sentences and transitions. I use hands on materials and lots of practice to teach math.
