I have been at Pennfield High School for almost 6 months now and I have learned how to incorporate the new standards into the curriculum. I am currently teaching part time in the Mathematics department, teaching the subjects of Geometry and Algebra. I also have spent 5 years working for the Carman Ainsworth School District as an At-Risk tutor. I have had to lower myself to the students’ level of understanding to make the subject of Mathematics make sense to each individual student. I graduated with honors from a liberal arts school with a BA in mathematics. During my time there I had also taken many science classes both biological and physical. While I was there I tutored students in math and science and ran labs for several science classes as a Laboratory Assistant. After my time there I was accepted into and began studying for a MA in mathematics at Western Michigan University where I was given an assistantship. As a Graduate assistant at WMU I have taught Algebra I and have facilitated Applied Calc Recitations, as well as tutored students a wide range of math classes.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that teaching styles need to be flexible to the student. I have worked with a very wide variety of students, from the severely limited autistic youth to the highly gifted medical student. While approach and focus might vary for the individual or subject matter the essence remains the same. I try to envision at least 3 different ways of approaching a problem, I discuss material but let the students ask questions which I then tailor my explanations toward. Everyone sees a problem slightly differently and if you allow yourself an open mind and creative thinking often you can help them break through a difficult problem because you are able to see it their way.
