A Little Bit About Me...

My style tends to range based on who I am trying to teach, and I suppose is most accurately labeled as adaptive. I understand that different people learn things in different ways, and so I try to accommodate that with my teaching. For instance if I found that a student learns better visually then I would attempt to use visual cues and examples in lesson plans to make the material as easy to understand as possible. I also believe in keeping a very loose and pleasant atmosphere, and making sure that everyone feels comfortable and safe, which I believe also assists in the learning process.
My first major mentoring/teaching experience occurred in college when I began leading study groups and eventually organizing tutoring sessions with a number of my fellow English, Calculus, and Physics students. My experiences as the oldest of seven children instilled in me the desire to educate others, so I obtained my BS degree in Biology and Secondary Education. I taught 7th and 8th grade sciences for five years before staying home to be a full time mother and substitute teaching on the high school level for 3 more years. I operated a small daycare during my children's growing years before returning to work fulltime in the business world. I have trained, mentored and supervised many, many young people over the years and still enjoy great personal reward from helping them grow as individuals, gain self-confidence and learn.

I am lawyer. I've also taught and tutored for approximately 2 years. Since I read and write for a living, I appreciate the beauty of words and the impact that a carefully placed word can make. My undergraduate degree is in Psychology and I've worked with many personality types in my professional life; as such, I work well with variant personality types.
My teaching style is dynamic. I try to make all lessons interesting to capture the attention of my students. Typically, I teach the material for a short period in the beginning of the lesson, but focus my efforts on reinforcing the acquisition of knowledge and skill in the student through activities and cooperative discussion of the material.
