I am currently a Special Education Teacher within the Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School District for the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years. Prior to my employment there I was a building substitute within the Albany City School District as well as a certified BOCES substitute approved through many schools throughout the Capital Region. I completed my Masters at the University at Albany in Summer of 2013 in both Special Education and Literacy. I believe teaching is more than just showing how to solve a problem, but is helping the student to discover the “bigger picture”. For that reason, I ask a lot of questions to ensure that a student is not just learning by rote, but understands a topic within its larger context. In that way, he or she is learning not only how to solve a particular problem or answer a specific question, but also how to apply it to other problems in the future. I also like to make problems relevant. Students often complain that there is no reason to study something – math, for example. I believe that all children learn in the there own way. I believe in Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences. I think that all students have the capability to learn anything they desire as long as they are taught based on their needs.
I have a bachelors degree in Elementary Education. I was employeed at New Covenant Charter School during the 2009-2010 school year. I implemented Guided Reading using Fountas and Pinnell's theory.
