When am i ever going to use this in my daily life? Its important to let them see the applications from knowing calculus based formulas to predict market declines (algorithms), to basic math in in inventory work, to understanding complex words and their proper sentence usage so they can understand what rudimentary or neophyte means in a job interview. Specifically, I start with the standards: what needs to be learned. Working backwards, I break the standards up into smaller concepts. Once the concepts are explained to the student, and the student understands the concepts, repetition begins in order to facilitate retention. Smaller concepts are then tied into larger ones. Although I have only been teaching in a classroom setting for the last two semesters, I have spent a great deal of time teaching friends and fellow students over the years.
