A Little Bit About Me...

As I suffered through my younger years with Attention Deficit Disorder, I feel that it is extremely important to appeal to almost all of the senses when teaching. As for myself, I am definitely a visual learner, so I feel that visual aids are important. I am a big fan of hand outs in full color. You will often find me drawing a picture on the board. I feel it is important to hear it and see it, and if you can, touch it. Another important teaching style I implement, is watching my students and making sure they know how to do it. Going around and walking each student through the process and asking them to do what I did really confirms that the student understands what I have taught them.
As a former computer instructor, I can't tell you how much I miss teaching. Teaching was the one career in my life where I felt completely fulfilled. I truly love sharing my knowledge and bei ... read more

I tutored my teammates in English, Algebra, and Speech. I made 4.0 grades in most of my English classes. I wrote countless research papers and essays. I also completed one semester of law school at the University of South Carolina in 2009. I was also a volunteer Guardian ad litem for Pickens County from June 2008 until January 2010. I mentored 7 children during that time period.
I have always been a very driven and accomplished student, so I feel that I should use my gift to teach others how to become great students. My goal is to work off of the strengths of the students I tutor and build their confidence so that they will have a greater desire to learn. I am an excellent listener. I absolutely love children of all ages. I am a strong advocate for using literature to spark students' interests in topics. I believe that in order for children to learn, they need to make their own discoveries. I like to use a lot of hands-on activities for children to learn. I encourage children to work together to find answers. Overall, I love working with children and truly believe I can make a difference in their lives.
I am a graduate of Appalachian State University and am currently a graduate student in Reading at Clemson University. I have a BS in elementary education and absolutely love working with children. I have a minor in English, so I am confident in both my reading skills and writing skills. As a recent graduate from Clemson University's Calhoun Honors College, I deeply believe in the importance of education. I graduated high school with a high GPA and a 1420/1600 SAT score, I was granted the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship to attend college, where I graduated in three and a half years with honors. As a Management major, I was one of the best writers in my classes. I feel that my education has adequately prepared me to tutor students in English, sociology, philosophy, and mathematics. For the past two and a half years, I have served as a volunteer Young Life leader at Wren High School. Mentoring high school students, I have learned how to communicate with them.
I truly believe that every student has the opportunity to perform well academically. While school comes naturally to some, others need someone to come beside them to help them learn. The best educators creat ... read more

I love to work with children of all ages and genders. I have worked with children who have learning disabilities, physical disabilities as well as children of all ages, races, and genders. I attempt to make learning as fun and relevant to the child as possible as every child has varying levels of understanding and concentrations. I am extremely patient and can handle anything. I like to relate learning to childrens' lives (make it about basketball if the boy likes basketball, or about chocolate if the girl likes chocolate).
I was a peer tutor in high school for English and Spanish. I also tutored children in Hebrew at a local temple. In addition, I volunteered as a tutor for underprivileged children in Chicago in all areas: Spelling, Reading, Writing, Math, Language, etc. for grades K-8.

I have always had a deep appreciation and passion for the English language. I began reading at the age of three, and excelled in reading and grammar throughout my public school education. As a Marketing professional for more than 25 years, I have written extensively for clients. I recently collaborated on a play which is being produced in November of this year. Between February of 2007 and December of 2008, I was privileged to serve as an instructor in Therapeutic Massage at North Georgia Technical College. My beliefs are that all children can learn, however, they must learn at their own pace and in their own way. This may mean being extremely patient and empathetic, not sympathetic, to their needs and using their strengths to build confidence while using their weaknesses to set goals. Blooms taxonomy is essential to use for setting standards and assessment of student learning. I apply this to my teaching methods as much as possible along with using hands on experiences to build student interest. I am available evenings and weekends for tutoring. I am very patient and easy going but firm. I hope to provide a comfortable tutoring session in which the student gains confidence in order to succeed in the future!

I enjoy teaching and working with all students from a variety of social economic backgrounds. All children are capable of learning, but in different ways and at their own pace. I try to instill a love of learning in my students along with building their self esteem and confidence. I love being a role model for them. I am very patient, kind, understanding, flexible, and easy going. Students should come first. Educators can and should make a positive difference in their students' lives.
