A Little Bit About Me...

My mother is a reading development teacher. She works with Title 1 children every day in her job. Before coming to college, I volunteered over 100 hours working with a Title 1 child on her reading, writing, and math skills. She was in the third grade for the second time that year, and by no means can I take credit for the fact that she went on to pass that year, but I do believe I helped her by understanding her difficulties, working with her as someone who was interested in seeing her succeed. I really like individualized teaching and prefer to work in small groups or one-on-one. I believe in providing multiple teaching methods to include all learning styles. My teaching style is mostly form-fitted to each child. I assess what level they are at, how quickly they learn, and what areas they need help in or should strengthen. I cannot stress the importance of patience when it comes to tutoring children, which I have an abundance of, having taught various ages. “You love what you understand and you understand what you are taught.” I believe learning should be fun and understandable. Many times, especially in science, students do not like a subject, because it is not explained in terms they understand. I believe the key is to relate any subject to something the students already understand/love. If a student needs help in math and they love M&M’s, then you can find an equation for the various colors in a bag of M&M’s or find the surface area of an M&M. Everything relates to everything, the connection just needs to be made. When a connection is made with previous knowledge there is a deeper understanding and you are less likely to forget what you have been taught. The key is to be creative and fun.

The thing I love most about teaching is opening up someones eyes to something new and seeing the "wow" look on their faces. Sometimes certain subject matter is not always easy for a person to learn. For three years at Florida State University I was enrolled in an excellent teacher education program. At the end of the program I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Social Science Education. While at Florida State University I received three certifications, Social Science Education (6-12), Professional Educator for (All Grades) and Integrated Curriculum (5-9).
