LESSONS SHOULD ACCOMMODATE STUDENT LEARNING STYLES

My belief is that all students have different learning styles. Therefore lessons need to be individualized to meet student needs. In order to be successful students need to be engaged by creative teachers. My teaching experience has taught me to accommodate these needs when developing lesson plans.
I have 15 years of teaching experience with special needs students in a rural school district. My extensive experience in different subjects and venues has engendered in me an adaptive teaching style. I am very comfortable teaching in both a classroom setting as well as one-to-one. I truly believe that the key to learning is proper motivation. Rather than giving answers to a student who is having difficulties, I prefer to guide students, prodding them along in the right direction with directed prompts. I have had two practicum rotations thus far. My first rotation was at C. W. Baker High School, in Baldwinsville, NY. This was a 10th grade, level one Global Studies classroom. I assisted with group activites, and helping students connect the information they were currently learning to prior knowledge. My second rotation was at Grant Middle School, in Syracuse, NY. This is a 7th grade (begining US history) classroom. During this time I taught several lessons, created and administered a pre-test, as well as work one-one with several students that had IEP's and lower literacy levels.

Individualization is an important part of my teaching style. I think it is important to identify what the student needs to work on and present it in a way the student can grasp the concept and enjoy learning. The student has to enjoy learning to succeed. I try to present material in such a way that the student will find it interesting and use different techniques to help them remember what they have learned.
