I enjoy working with all children. I believe all children can learn, but each in different ways. To be an effective teacher/tutor, I must first learn the student's learning style.I am not a big fan of the standardized tests, in fact, I believe that many children and young adults may suffer from test anxiety. I believe that I may suffer from that also. I am dependable, honest, friendly, and professional. I believe one of my strongest traits are "setting the example" and finding a way to "teach outside the box". My goal is to provide my students with the best education possible as well as the ability to believe in themselves and know that "yes they can!"
I have been a substitute teacher with the Boise School District for the past 6 years now. I have also worked for the company, Club Z tutoring. I have both a Bachelors degree as well as a Masters degree (academically) but still n ... read more

When teaching mathematics, I believe that over half of my job is social skills. Calming my students down, easing their frustration, and making them feel comfortable is over half the battle. It isn't that mathematics is too hard for most people, it is just too frustrating for most people. So my job is to set my client at ease and to create a learning environment. Once that learning environment is created, teaching is easy. I have worked with difficult students. One, who we will call John, has Autism, Schizophrenia, and vomits when upset. It was my job to teach John how to count money. After trying a variety of methods, we eventually found that learning in traditional environments was too stressful for John. So, we played Monopoly. People had been trying to teach him to count money for months, maybe years. Three weeks after I started with him, I took him to Walmart with a ha ... read more

Although I am patient with the student, I am persistent in searching for new ways to present material so that the student can relate to it. I put my Special Education background to good use with students of all ages and walks of life, especially in breaking a skill into its component parts so as to fill in any knowledge gaps that may be unknowingly holding the student back from success. I am also gifted in recognizing hidden patterns that can help or hinder and either capitalizing on or reducing them as needed. Since I've discovered that it's often self-esteem or fear that creates the learning difficulty, I've also learned to teach esteem-building and stress-relieving techniques that are easy for the student to learn and implement. My mission is sharing with all that I meet the valuable and wonderful things that I learn or discover on my life journey.

A Little Bit About Me...

None of my family had gone to college, so it was predicted I would not either. I had a hunger to learn, so I systematically worked full-time and studied part-time, earning eight major degrees in cities where they alowed residency rquirements to be met in such a way. I was young and energetic, so it was a lot of work, but a joy. It took about 15 years to finally earn my doctorate. Along the way, I earned certification in a half dozen fields (especially loved English, social stuides, and psychology). I was employed for decades in education, teaching full-time for five years, often teaching on the side when I was counselor or administrator. Except for my earliest years of employment (where I was often employed full-time in radio or newspaper), I often tutored along the way. I have been able to tutor part-time a good many years since I often come across young people (and adults) who ... read more
