As the child of teachers, I learned the value of a good education early in life. With my parents' guidance and encouragement, I obtained both a BS and a PhD in Chemistry (which included a Study-Abroad stint in the Netherlands). Following my time in Europe, I pursued a 25-year industrial chemistry career that was centered on the automotive, specialty chemical and building material industries. Additional activity in overseas technical transfers and global business has enhanced my communications skills (e.g., university-level funding proposal preparation). Over the past four years, my passion for education has led me to teach and tutor community college students in mathematics, chemistry and other physical sciences. I teach by laying more emphasis upon understanding the concept of a subject matter, than to just help students complete their class assignments.I try to push my students in a way that they hone their analytical skills and motivate themselves to be problem solvers. This will help them in any career path that they wish to pursue in their near future. As a PhD student,I have been trained to look at a problem from various alternative options and in an interdisciplinary manner. I thoroughly love teaching as I come from a line of teachers myself. I have demonstrated that learning happens on multiple levels depending on what level one is working on. In my experience, I have learned that understanding is a process which involves listening, question and answer, humility, multiple approaches (including mixed media, visual and audio stimulus, humor, etc.), and a general openness to learn. Teaching is very subjective. Each individual learns according to his/her own style. What I find challenging and rewarding is to find that point where it “clicks”. I believe the best way to learn is through experience and discovery. As an example, I can describe the intelligence of an octopus. But until you actually see a video of one opening a jar for a treat, do you truly realize it as a thinking, planning being. I feel that teaching an individual how to use available resources is just as important as the actual subject. Enabling a student to go out and discover the wonders around him/her through research and education is a wonderful thing indeed.
