My comments on tutoring English ESOL : Working on a MA in Applied Linguistics with an ESOL concentration

Aside from my degrees, I tutored fellow students (and even professors) in either Spanish or German throughout 2006-2010. I studied abroad in Costa Rica and Germany and lived in Spain for a year teaching English. I have extensive knowledge of both Latin American and Peninsular Spanish and my German is mostly Northern. I began learning Spanish in 2002 and German in 2004.

Don't risk your grade/money on mere paper qualifications

You will see many ads by former or current professors trying to make a buck on the side. They are terrible tutors - they spent their whole careers having students beg them for a better grade. I have spent my whole life learning how to explain the most complex concepts to absolutely anybody. You will also see many people touting a related professional position as qualification. Many of them got their positions through nepotism and cheating to get paper qualifications (Some are my former clients) and neither have a good understanding of the material nor do they explain things well. I have run this business catering to client's needs for over a decade now. My rates are due to supply and demand - I have a busy schedule full of repeat customers and their referrals. I have many paper qualifications as well, but they honestly don't tell you much. Help with a particular program also depe ... read more

In 2007, I graduated from Penn State with a plan of attending graduate school for Creative Writing. I was devastated when I received three rejection letters from schools I admired. Instead of letting that devastation break me down, I accepted a job as an SAT/ACT Preparation Teacher at a learning center. After several weeks of successful, inspiring interactions with high school students in one-on-one sessions, I knew that the circuitous path that led me to this job was truly my destiny: I was meant to be a teacher. From the moment I had that realization on, I took all the steps I needed to become a certified teacher with a Master's in the Art of Teaching. I continue my journey daily as I student teach in the Newport News School District.
A year ago, I had the honor of substituting as an Assistant Teacher with an amazing kindergarten teacher. I learned then that she maintains her res ... read more

My teaching style initally involves getting to the know the person, what they are struggling with, why they think they may need a tutor, and anything they have tried in the past and what has and has not worked for them. I like to encorporate all aspects to assist with learning (visual aids, listening, and hands-on/practical). This may involve games, cartoons/movies (if tutoring Spanish), worksheeets. I also feel that goal-setting is important, and I think I would ask the tutee to set some individual/personal goals for themself, (i.e. amount of time studying or achieving certain fluency level).
I recently earned my M.A. in Counseling. I have extensive experience in working with individuals (children, adolescents, adults), from diverse backgrounds. Upon graduation from school, I moved to Guatemala, where I was an English teacher to Spanish-speaking students for a year. While there, I was able to work on both my Spanish and teaching skills. I have since been able to help English speakers enhance their Spanish proficiency State-side. I am currently working on my Masters in Counseling.
Each student is different, so addressing how best to teach each one will vary. I have found that the key to helping language students learn is first finding what will motivate them to learn. Learning a new language opens up a whole new world to the student, one they have never known before. Building off of a student's extra-curricular interests- sports, music, art, fashion, or anything else- transforms learning a language from repeating verb charts to becoming more apt to pursuing his interests in an international way.

I believe engaging activities facilitate the learning process especially with regards to a foreign language. I also agree that assigning meaning to what a student learns is perhaps the most important aspect of teaching. As a teacher I strive to relate concepts to the student's life. Learning a foreign language can be the most rewarding experience for anyone because of the benefits it brings. In the classroom I do my very best to keep my students attention engaged and active in the daily lessons. I also promote daily checks of understanding so the student is able retain what they have already been taught.

As a high school and university student, I regularly tutored other students in Spanish and other subjects, both professionally and on a volunteer basis. While I was earning my bachelor's and my master's in Spanish, I gained the skills required to help other students reach their foreign language goals. I was paid by George Mason University to tutor college athletes in Spanish. I have tutored elementary age students in every subject from math to literature and English to Social Studies. Through my experience with my universities' literary magazines, I have also achieved an extensive knowledge of grammar and writing and would be qualified to help students with their writing.

I am a natiVe from France. I have been teaching since 1983. I started my teaching career in the French public schools, and continued in the States since 1989. I have a broad experience in the teaching of the language (elementary to HS). I am also an ESL teacher, and I have been tutoring students in several subjects over the years.
I believe teachers have to use different approaches to reach a maximum of students' intelligences. The instruction has also to be interesting to captivate students' attention. It is also important to assess students' acvhievement regularly.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a very motivating person and tend to use humor as a method of teaching. I teach to and with the child and never down to him/her. I break large components into their simplest forms so that a child learns to take things one step at a time and not feel overwhelmed. I make the learning relevant to what the child is interested in or knows about so that he/she can be more engaged in the learning process. We set the goal-a reasonable one yet with high expectations and together we achieve it.
For the past ten years, I have been teaching High School English. I have taught grades 9-12 in Literature, Composition and Standards of Learning in preparation for the state exams. I have taught inclusion classes involving students with numerous learning styles and have always met and exceeded the expectations of their parents.

By earning a duel BA in Spanish and Linguistics and a MA in Applied Linguistics, I have spent an extensive amount of time researching teaching methods and learning styles pertaining to first and second language acquisition. Understanding these learning styles allows me to relate to a wide range of students and discover what works best on an individual basis. I have applied these skills as a university writing tutor, as well as an editor for McGraw-Hill text books in the foreign language department.
I am very enthusiastic about language learning, because I know understanding and utilizing language has the ability to influence learning across all subject matter. I am patient and methodical in analyzing the student's learning styles in order to identify the most effective and efficient presentation of the material. However, I am also confident that learning styles are co-dependent ... read more
