Never stop pushing yourself to learn

I have taught a large array of children and adults, anywhere from a 2nd grader struggling with reading to adult Burmese refugees. I have the patience and flexibility to successfully work with anyone. I started tutoring when I was around the age of 13. I taught a young Korean girl English, where I would have to create my own lesson plans. While I attended Okemos high school, I partook in volunteering experiences that dealt with tutoring. For two years, I was placed at an elementary school where I would tutor 1st-5th graders biweekly with anything from basic math to practice with reading. I worked as Scoring director for math and science at Pearson. This position involved training adult professional scorers to score elementary through high school open-ended student responses. This required teaching the math behind the scoring requirements first. As how the student answers were obtained was as important as the correct answers, it was necessary to also train the scorers how to evaluate the students' work.
Although I have usually worked in small groups of 8 to 24 people, the training was usually one-on-one in order to deal with individual difficulties in understanding the material. Each person had his or her own specific needs that had to be fulfilled to successfully understand the material.

I worked in the Math Department, as either a tutor or a Teaching Assistant, for the past three years. As a Teaching Assistant I led a 50 minute recitation of the material, graded materials, and kept records for my 30 students. As a tutor I helped MSU undergraduates learn key concepts and study for their upcoming exams. I worked in the Algebra room and the Calc I room. I helped out a little in the Calc II room, but I never had time, as a full time student myself, to review the material and refresh my memory, so I was much less helpful than I should have been.
