I strongly support the belief that all children are capable of learning if given sufficient opportunity. As a classroom teacher often facing as many as 37 students at one time, it was difficult to provide the appropriate learning environment for many of these children's needs. Through small group tutoring, however, the right learning environment can be created if the tutor fosters a positive relationship with the student. Developing such a relationship requires considerable patience and consistency on the part of the tutor. As a volunteer basketball referee at Northside Baptist Church, Upward basketball program since 1998, I work with children between the ages of 7 and 13. I teach them about basketball and sportsmanship. As a parent of a 17 year old son, I constantly mentor him and his friends on life, school and everything in between. While attending Claflin University in the pursuit of obtaining duel BA's in the field of journalism and sociology, my off times was spent in the middle schools of Orangeburg, SC for nearly six years. I spent 4-5 hours in the classroom (daily) as an assistant and tutor/mentor in language arts classes grades 6-8.
