My experience has included eight years in public and private schools in the USA and four years in an international school in Germany. During these years of teaching I taught elementary fourth and fifth, middle school 7-9 grades with varied subjects, and also high school for Bible as Literature. Since I lived overseas, learned the language there and had taught, I had the opportunity to work as an ESL tutor for 5 years in the States. In the public school I also have served as a Math and Reading tutor to elementary students for 4 years. Since children do have different learning styles, I have found that some of your beginning stages with them is figuring out how to effectively work with a student. I believe that children must be engaged in the subject matter before successful learning takes place. Finding fun, interesting, and personal ways for the child to connect to the topic will truly allow them a chance to learn and retain information. I love finding different ways for individual learners to understand what they are being taught. I am a senior in the Education program at Appalachian State University. As an Elementary Education major, I have worked closely with children from many age levels. I have participated in an after-school tutor/mentor program at Appalachian State in 2008. In 2009, I completed two internships while in the Education Program. One working with 2nd grade students and the other with 5th grade students. I have also taken many courses to understand context and teaching strategies in all subject areas.
