Recent Graduate Looking To Help

I am a recent graduate of Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania (May 2011). I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a concentration in creative writing. I also have a minor in photography. During my time at Mercyhurst College, I worked as a writing tutor in the school’s writing center. When students entered the center, it was my job to immediately make them feel comfortable by greeting them with a friendly smile and asking what I could help them with. After this, the students’ explained their assignment and expressed any concerns they had or anything their professors wanted them to work on. Although, I have never been in charge of my own class room I consider my teaching style energetic. I love working with students of all ages and find that teaching methods and styles tend to adapt to those individual students. I think it is important to be encouraging and patient with all students. I believe in a hand on approach where students learn from experiences and doing rather than being lectured. I am a very energetic and interactive teacher, moving around the classroom, challenging students with questions, providing many examples and anecdotes to illustrate teaching points. I always try to teach inductively--leading the student to discover the answer on their own, and I encourage them to express their own original thoughts. I use a multisensory approach to teaching, using audio-visual resources and the internet whenever possible. I really enjoy leading students to see things from "out of the box" perspectives, to find relationships between seemingly unrelated things, and to synthesize novel insights by doing so.
