A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching for me is a calling. My reward is watching my students grow academically and socially. As a lifelong learner, I seek to ignite a spark for self-discovery in my students' lives. I have experienced firsthand how the arts have helped children grow, providing them with academic and personal success. I know that with the right evironment, structure, and guidance, a child is able to reach for and exceed their potential. I believe that you must approach education by meeting the student where he or she is rather having the student conform to your style. Therefore I embrace an eclectic style. Each student will present with some king of dominant learning style. They will be primarily visual, auditory, conceptual or experiential. It is my job to discover that style in the teaching process and direct my approach to that student.
I taught with the Bangor adult education program in the early 1980's as a graduate student in educational psychology. I taught adults a variety of subjects math, English and GED preparation at that time. I also taught English as a Second language with them. I first determine the student's learning style so I have an idea what works for him or her. Learners who have experienced repeated failure need successful experiences to help build self-confidence; I start with what they can do successfully already. Knowing the individual's interests and talents helps me tie the topic to something important to the student, and to help them understand how the topic relates to their present and future lives. Finally, helping the individual understand how she or he learns is the key that will allow him or her to take control. I help the student identify strategies and systematic ways to problem-solve so that she or he can develop independence.
