My comments on tutoring Special Education : As a Resource Room teacher for children with Special Needs I had the opportunity to get to know my students very well in a small setting.

I have taught in both public and private school settings. In the public school setting I was a Resource Room Teacher for students with varied learning and behavior needs. I was responsible for writing and implementing each student's IEP's. In addition I created an optimal learning environment for them. In the private setting I taught for a number of years one to one reading instruction for elementary age students. I have also taught and facilitated lessons at a private children's Hands On Science Center.

Special Education is one of my top subjects! Since my fourteen-year-old son was diagnosed with Autism, at the age of eighteen months, I have provided therapy in our home and in camp settings under the supervision of Ph.D. and masters level therapist. I have provided the following therapies: Floortime, Applied Behavior Analysis, and Relationship Development Intervention. To meet my son's individual needs I have created therapies combining those listed above.

A Little Bit About Me...

In 2007 I had the wonderful opportunity of being one of two teachers at the Ann Arbor Academy's lower school for students with learning disabilities. I have worked as a Teacher's Assistant for three years where I did extensive tutoring with one student over the course of the year. I substitute taught for two years where I learned a great deal about schools, particularly elementary schools and their various curriculum and expectations for grade levels. As well, I was a full time tutor and mentor for students at Pine Ridge Academy for a year while I lived in Burlington. I also teach the second grade religious school class at my temple. I am also a substitute teacher for a day school. I am currently in graduate school at Eastern Michigan University where I am pursuing a credential in k-12, emotional impairment and learning disabilities.

As a student I was most drawn to the ideas of Piaget and Gardner. Their teaching philosophies made the most sense to me when it came to teaching. Piaget focused on the idea of play as learning. This may sound strange to some, but a child is always learning, no matter they are doing, due to the fact that so many experiences are totally new to them. When children stacks blocks they are exploring many scientific concepts such as balance, gravity, cause and effect and many others. When children scribble with crayons they are exploring many concepts of art and aesthetics. Gardner describes the idea of multiple intelligences. Everyone is good at some aspects of learning and less so in others. Children learn in many different ways.
