Experienced, question-based biology tutor

I received my M.S. in Biology from Eastern Michigan University in 2014. I taught introductory biology courses there for two years, with subjects ranging from population ecology to genetics. I received acclaim from my students and colleagues for my dedication and commitment to the material and student understanding, as well as my teaching style.
I find a discussion format with questions to be the most effective, as it not only allows student participation, but also provides information on where students are confused.

through my teaching career I have had numerous workshops and professional Development in all areas in education. I have been able to combine different teaching strategies to fit the needs of my students. In Arizona I taught Fourth Grade where 80% of my studens were English Language Learners of Hispanic decent. This was a real leaning experience. I took the Dibels training which really helped my teaching techniques. Using Orton-Guillingham guidelines with the hundreds of hours of teacher training allowed my students to excel. I believe my varied experiences and a love for my profession enables me to be a Master Teacher.

I enjoy teaching students who have some motivation to learn, and care about their subject matter. I like to make learning fun, because I feel so many kids today take courses to build a resume, rather than because they want to take them. I also feel like there is great deal that can be learned from the student as well. I hope to help students reach their goals while having a fun experience, but at the same time becoming proficient in the subject they are studying.

A Little Bit About Me...

I wanted to excite others as Chemistry had excited me. I teach the material and why it is so exciting. My style adapts to that specific student’s strengths, weaknesses and interests. I always try and connect their interests to the material, so it is more than just words and starts to be interesting. Chemistry is scary to many people, because they try to memorize, it’s too intricate remember everything. I teach the student to understand why and how substances react or behave. Knowledge of basics, allows the student to solve problems as they are given instead of memorizing specific answers. Problems must be asked from every angle so the student learns to use the basics to solve any scenario. Chemistry then becomes logical.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a high regard for the brilliance of children. It is my experience that some children need assistance in recognizing their gifts. I have had a chance to see many intellects blossom and self esteems thrive. Using techniques learned from various levels of education classes teamed with experience, I am able to connect and allow learning to happen. I find great satisfaction in helping enhance the quality of education in the lives of children.
Teaching children has been part of my life for many years, on many levels. I am currently a full time substitute teacher for Ann Arbor Public Schools. My past experience includes teaching Pre-K, preschool, directing educational camp programming, as well as substitute teaching for various grade levels.
