My teaching philosophy centers around encouraging student learning instead of straightforward lecturing. While training students during these years my approach has reflected the discovery that the process of leading students to the correct answer is more effective than lecturing them the answer. I employ various exercises, continuously look for examples outside the discipline, and generally avoid over-reliance on scientific jargon. For example, I once compared the rise of white blood cells fighting an invading pathogen to the way a governor may activate city guards upon suspecting infiltration by spies – a metaphor that may tap into student knowledge of video game scenarios. One student told me that the comparison was more helpful than pages of detailed description of the mechanism of the pathogen invasion and human response.

My comments on tutoring Genetics : My beloved topic. I make Genetics fun and interested to learn, focused on actual clinical/ biological cases rather than memorizing genotypic and phenotypic proportions and Mendel's laws.

I wanted to excite others as Chemistry had excited me. I teach the material and why it is so exciting. My style adapts to that specific student’s strengths, weaknesses and interests. I always try and connect their interests to the material, so it is more than just words and starts to be interesting. Chemistry is scary to many people, because they try to memorize, it’s too intricate remember everything. I teach the student to understand why and how substances react or behave. Knowledge of basics, allows the student to solve problems as they are given instead of memorizing specific answers. Problems must be asked from every angle so the student learns to use the basics to solve any scenario. Chemistry then becomes logical.
