I am an August 2009 graduate of the Adult Education/ESL program at the University of Alabama—Birmingham. I chose to study adult ESOL because I believed it would complement my undergraduate academic background in International Studies, and I have never been disappointed. Since the summer of 2006, I have served as an ESL instructor in a free class for adult learners at Shelton State Community College. Our adult learners include pre-literacy clients, international students desiring to attend university, but unable to afford paid second language instruction, and all levels of academic achievement in between these two extremes. I use an intercultural (as opposed to assimilationist) perspective, knowing that language teachers also teach culture; this is not only desirable, it is probably unavoidable.
