I have a Masters degree in anthropology (with minors in zoology and philosophy) and a Bachelors degree in zoology (with a chemistry minor) from Oregon State University. I have tutored high school students in math, science, reading, and writing for the Upward Bound program, was a teaching assistant in college biology laboratory and biological anthropology courses at OSU, and later a teacher of bioanthropology at Klamath Community College, OSU (online and on campus) and Western Oregon University. I was laid off in December 2009 due to budget cuts, but continue to present lectures and write scientific literature. I graduated with my master's three years ago, so I haven't had any actual teaching, but I have tutored for the community college where I live. I tutored essay writing and some math. I was also certified as a tutor through our community college. In college I taught certain subjects, but just for part of certain classes. I am presently tutoring on line also.
As an older student I was very driven to achieve a high level of excellence in my education, hardly ever missing a class. My basic teaching style utilizes a multimedia approach since different students learn in different ways (audio, visual, or hands-on). I like using simple “demo” experiments to show the “magic” of chemistry. Demos are then backed up by showing the chemical equations to explain what is actually going on. I also tend to use a lot of analogies, that students can related to. I access web information to help explain chemical concepts in creative ways. I also try to get students to think of problems as puzzles. I believe learning can be a fun experience as long as we never forget to ask the fundamental questions - "Why and How?"
