I've been tutoring since high schools in a wide range of subjects, such as latin, algebra II, and biology. The skills you use to teach yourself the material can be directly applied to someone else, especially when you find something does not click at first. I have a number of mnemonics for helping my tutees retain the material they've spent time learning. In college I don't tutor professionally because of time constraints, but I help other students understand problems they may be having difficulty with. I've also had my own SAT tutor and seen different programs and their styles, and I've chosen the one that I find the most effective.

I am a former mathematics teacher who is interested in returning to the profession. I have both tutored and taught the subject in the past, and have test scores that demonstrate my current proficiency. Recently, I finished a "refresher" graduate-level course at UNR, and am independently reading an assortment of literature from NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) and others.
Mathematics is a field that extends beyond a series of procedures as it taught far too widely these days. My stress is on conceptual understanding, as it is the key to understanding the subject. Even moreso than the procedures that we have been accustomed to viewing as being the core of Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus, conceputal underpinnings are what the make the subject meaningful.

If the subject lends itself to a real-world example or demonstration, I would offer this for thought. Finally I teach the core concept, connecting it to other concepts already understood by the student. There is usually more than one way to teach a concept. I take into account the learning style of the student. Written or diagrammatic methods might be more effective than verbal explanations.
